The main objectives of the Child in the City Foundation is to strengthen the position of children in cities, promote and protect their rights and give them space and opportunities to play and enjoy their own social and cultural lives. We do this by providing communications platforms for academics, practitioners and campaigners for children’s rights to disseminate research and good practice. One of the most important of these is the biennial (= every two years) international conference where scientists, urban planners and local authorities are brought together to share the latest knowledge.

The Community.Design.Initiative (CDI) is a collaborative project to redesign the East Scarborough Storefront (4040 Lawrence Avenue East) located in one of Canada’s most at-risk and diverse neighbourhoods. The project facilitates a conversation about architecture’s responsibility to engage across not only physical, but economic, social, cultural, and environmental contexts. The project goes beyond the building itself and explores the far-reaching effects of this change on the landscape of the inner suburbs as a result of this participatory architectural process.

The Sattya Media Arts Collective are creating a collaborative movement to transform the rapidly urbanizing city of Kathmandu, Nepal, with Urban Farming and Environmental Education.
They have set out to transform a vacant site into a modern adaptation of a traditional chowk, or town square. Dubbed Hariyo Chowk which means, "Green Commons" in Nepali, the project has served as a place to learn and share tips for urban greening and ways to create a socially sustainable future for Kathmandu.

Kic Park
(Sanghai, China)
Kik Park is a leftover urban area that Francesco Gatti is surprised to see has escaped being built-up and which is positioned at the entrance to the Kic Village, constructed in recent years for the students at the nearby universities of Fudan and Tongji. Since 2005 when the Italian architect transferred part of his professional activities to China he has recurrently been interested in the possibility of designing interstice spaces – as in the case of the In Factory JingAn Six Loft Buildings (2006), where the outside areas of the redevelopment project were treated on a par with a residential and work environment.
An essential element in his designs has always taken account of inter-activity: in this case between the people concerned (their actions and activities) and the influence of natural elements such as weather and sounds.

Participatory Urban Planning
"A community-led approach is key to the success of any placemaking project. Project for Public Spaces believes this so strongly that the very first tenet listed in our 11 principles for creating great public spaces is: “The community is the expert.”
So how does this community process actually work? Engaging with this issue at length, the Montréal Urban Ecology Centre (MUEC) has published a useful guide, called Participatory Urban Planning: Planning the city with and for its citizens, which was produced with support from Québec en Forme and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Today marks the release of the guide’s English translation, following the French language version that was launched this summer."

How to engage kids and community in playground design
How can we learn what children and adults want and need in playgrounds? And how can we make sure that those playgrounds are a vital public space? These questions were front and center when I participated in a recent review for students in a graduate program for landscape architects. The focus of the course was how to create playgrounds that would stimulate creative, harmonious, healthy urban living. More... |

Otwarty Targ
Gdansk, Poland
Gdansk, Poland
The arranging of the Targ Węglowy square is a developed continuation of intervention actions started in 2013. The project consists of three functions: market, rest and sport. The editable character of the space was a solution to cooperate with lots of events which take place on the square during the summertime. The space of the square was arranged with mobile modules of urban furniture and the green court, which is a base tor them during the events, when the whole instalation could be moved to the place of court and take a compact form which still is a space for resting.

Off-ground
The Off-Ground installation is like a playground for adults. As adults, who lead much more hectic, responsibility-ridden lives than children, the perfect playground would be a place for rest and relaxation. But instead of taking on the semblance of a serious retreat, the Off-Ground installation is much more casual, not to mention urban. PSFK points out, "The installation also means to question how playgrounds are usually designed with only children in mind."

WHAT MAKES A GREAT PLACE?
As both an overarching idea and a hands-on approach for improving a neighborhood, city, or region, Placemaking inspires people to collectively reimagine and reinvent public spaces as the heart of every community. Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share, Placemaking refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value. More than just promoting better urban design, Placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution. Urban Playground Spaces
Children’s playgrounds form part of the urban landscape of a town or merge perfectly with natural surrounds outside built-up areas. In terms of natural surrounds, adults prefer a carefully tended lawn and a tidy, uncluttered layout, while children enjoy a wilder environment.

Yahtzee is a dice game made by Milton Bradley (now owned by Hasbro), which was first marketed as "Yatzie" by National Association Service of Toledo, Ohio, in the early 1940s.
